Taken out by medical car - Volta a Catalunya breakthrough José Manuel Diaz forced to abandon following bizarre crash

José Manuel Diaz finished in the Top10 of stage 2 to Vallter 2000 in a brilliant performance, but on the third day of the Volta a Catalunya his goals were taken out by an extremely unusual accident involving the medical assistance car.

Diaz, sitting 10th in the GC at the start of stage 3, was the leader of Burgos - BH into a day that was crucial for the overall classification. It wasn't to be his day however, he didn't get to contest for a result as earlier in the day he suffered a crash.

However here there was not too much damage, it was what followed that has shocked those who wonder how the Spaniard found himself abandoning the race after the end of yesterday's stage. Whilst riding back into the peloton Diaz was in the medical car receiving some assistance, when the vehicle suddenly swerved and caused him to crash again.

This time around more seriously. Diaz suffered a fracture in the fibula - a bone in the leg - but nevertheless got up once again and still finished the high-mountain stage despite his injuries. He arrived at the summit of Port Ainé but post-race analysis concluded that his injuries were too much for him to start stage 4.
