Stelvio climb at risk of being cancelled for second year running at Giro d'Italia due to immense levels of snow

One of the most historic climbs in Italian cycling, the Stelvio is at risk of being removed from the route of the Giro d'Italia for the second year in a row due to the immense levels of snow at the summit.

According to reports by the Italian news channel RAI, the amount of snow on the iconic slopes look set to ensure that there will be no climbing to the summit any time soon. With the Stelvio planned for the peloton on stage 16, it's unlikely things will have improved enough in less than a couple of weeks for riders to be able to take on the climb.

Whilst as of the time of writing there has been no official announcement of a change to the route, RAI are convinced the decision has already been made and the Cima Coppi at the 2024 Giro d'Italia will no longer be the Stelvio.
