Alexey Lutsenko provided Astana Qazaqstan Team with a glimmer of hope now towards the end of the spring, winning the Giro di Sicilia and finishing high at the Amstel Gold Race. However it was short-lived, he has struggled since and now abandoned the Tour de Romandie with a Covid-19 infection.
The Kazakh struggled to perform at both Flèche Wallone and Liège-Bastogne-Liège, ending his period of good form. With more modest competition however he could still be an outsider for the overall classification at the Swiss race where the team could also benefit from the UCI points they currently lack.
Lutsenko rode to 107th spot in the opening prologue which was not a positive sign, however this morning the confirmation came that he was not at his full health, diagnosed now with Covid-19. The team will hope to support Mark Cavendish through the two sprinter opportunities that will come in the race, the first of which today.
