After over seven months out of action, Spanish cycling prodigy Juan Ayuso made a long-awaited return to racing on the opening prologue of the Tour de Romandie on Tuesday.
Despite saying he wasn't expecting any miracles prior to the race the 20-year-old who is still recovering from persistent tendonitis rode to a very impressive 13th-placed finish on the opening prologue of the Tour de Romandie with his time of 7.37.
Just twelve seconds behind the eventual winner, Soudal - Quick-Step's Josef Cerny, Ayuso outperformed many of the pre-race general classification favourites such as his own UAE Team Emirates teammate, Adam Yates, Team DSM's Romain Bardet, Bahrain - Victorious's Damiano Caruso and Adam Yates's brother, Team Jayco AlUla's leader, Simon Yates.
Following his podium finish on debut at last year's Vuelta a Espana, Ayuso has been viewed by some as the next big thing in Spanish cycling and although the start to his 2023 campaign has been delayed the Spaniard will be hoping this prologue is a sign of things to come.
