Sonny Colbrelli suffered loss of conscience, convulsions and cardiac arrest according to Volta a Catalunya organizers

The opening stage of the Volta a Catalunya delivered a lot of spectacle, with Michael Matthews taking the win in the uphill dash to the line. The day was however marked by negative reasons, as runner-up Sonny Colbrelli lost conscience minutes after the finale and needed cardiac massage, in what was an extremely troublesome situation.

Several on-sight reporters, and later the Bahrain - Victorious team had reported that Colbrelli had regained conscience and was talking shortly after. He has been transferred to the university hospital of Girona where he will undergo more medical tests. The race organizations has released a communique with the details on the post-stage incident.

The communique mentions that Colbrelli had "loss of conscience and convulsions developing finally in a cardiac arrest. He has been assisted immediately by the paramedical team, who have done CR using a defibrilator."

In what was the best possible outcome for the situation, the Italian rider was "stabilized and evacuated" out of the finish line area where he initially collapsed. More informations should be released by the team in the coming days regarding Colbrelli's health.
