36 seconds separate four riders at Paris-Nice into the final and decisive stage... Brandon McNulty and Matteo Jorgenson are separated by only four seconds; whilst Mattias Skjelmose and Remco Evenepoel sit just above half a minute behind. The latter holds the key to the race, veteran analyst José de Cauwer believes.
“Maybe McNulty will find himself again with a good night's sleep. But with those steeper climbs…" José De Cauwer said in an analysis for Sporza. “But Evenepoel can also do a great thing there. Obviously Jorgenson is in better shape than him and McNulty a little bit better.” De Cauwer thinks that McNulty will have a very difficult time maintaining the race lead, with Jorgenson right on his heels and several riders close by who can make the difference and cut that gap.
With rainy weather and plenty of explosive climbs, the final day of the 'Race to the Sun' (which has been the exact opposite this year) can be brutal for the riders, and the GC is not decided by any means. No spot in the podium or Top5 in fact; with many riders still within two minutes; a gap that can be changed in the steep final ascent of the Col des Quatre Chémins, the Côte de Peille or even the early breakaway of the day which will be hard to chase taking into consideration the terrain and weather conditions.
However most favourites may wait for the final ascent, as it features enough distant and steep gradients to make the difference among even the very best. "In whose favor is that? I would say that of the lighter types such as Remco Evenepoel. He still holds the key to Paris-Nice," de Cauwer argues.
