Quinn Simmons believes US National Championship win "may have saved my career"

The stars and stripes jersey will be coming back to Europe with Quinn Simmons after the 22-year-old took victory at the US National Championships road race for the first time in his career.

In the immediate aftermath of his victory, an emotional Simmons paid tribute to Gino Mäder. Simmons was one of the first riders on the scene as the Swiss rider tragically crashed to his death on a descent at the Tour de Suisse.

“After having one of the worst days ever on a bike, I just feel super grateful to be here with my family and racing with my brother," Simmons told Cycling Weekly. “Dad jumped into the team leader's car for the last laps, while Mum stood by the refueling.”

“Honestly, today may have saved my career. I really thought about what I wanted to do and this brings the power back," he continued before referencing the upcoming Tour de France after his selection was confirmed on Monday. "For the first time in a long time, the Stars and Stripes will make the rounds in France."
