One of the most prestigious week-long stage race on the calendar, Paris-Nice gets underway this Sunday afternoon with numerous big-name riders and potential Tour de France hopefuls looking to put down an early-season marker.
American cycling expert and rider of the 1988 Paris-Nice, Bob Roll will be covering the race for NBC Sports Cycling and the 63-year-old is backing his countryman, Team Visma | Lease a Bike's Matteo Jorgenson to crack the final podium.
"I'm going to give you my podium and then I want to hear yours," Roll says in conversation with stage winner at Paris-Nice 2009, Christian Vande Velde. "I'm going to say Primoz Roglic, Remco Evenepoel and then Matteo Jorgenson."
Vande Velde though, isn't so sure. "I'm going to agree with you on the first two and I would love to see Matteo Jorgenson up there in third place, but if you want me to call someone out, maybe Mattias Skjelmose?" he suggests instead. "He's a rider that's been riding strong, had a great Tour de France last year and actually helped Mads Pedersen win the stage that he won on a very similar finish to what we'll see on stage 1. That's probably the third place I'd put up there."
