"Poulidor is a legend of the Tour" - Julian Alaphilippe pays tribute

Stage 9 of the 2023 Tour de France is absolutely dripping in historical significance with the start town being the home of the late, great Raymond Poulidor.
As such, before the racing began in earnest, many riders have been paying tribute including Soudal - Quick-Step's Julian Alaphilippe. "Poulidor is a legend of the Tour," says the Frenchman to Cyclism'Actu pre-stage. "I had the chance to know him a little and to chat with him at the start of the stages. He is someone who will remain in our memories."
The grandfather of Mathieu van der Poel, there was a big tribute prior to the stage in honour of Poulidor with van der Poel riding today's stage with a specially customed bike, adorned with pictures of his grandfather's biggest wins.
"Before the start of the Tour, I watched a report on the history of the French on the Tour de France, and that allowed me to realize even more the trace that he left behind him," continues Alaphilippe. "He is in our hearts and I'm really happy to have known him."

- I understand that there are things that are 'lost in translation' on a site like this, which don't necessarily have the budget for things like proofreading that larger publications have. My sense of humour may not be that funny after all, but I do seriously appreciate being able to view articles and and comment on them without having to pay a fee, which is increasingly rare these days..

To be fair about the men thing, it might be a mechanical translation problem, I think in Dutch the size of a team or group of humans is expressed by the same word as the male sex, a bit like in English when you speak about humanity in relation to the planet you say man. - People were saying stuff like that years ago but in the meantime he’s proved himself often enough. Do you reallythink he’s going to stop working and improving until he can match the best? It’s just a matter of time. Once he notices the mountains are costing him the title, he’ll start making plans how to overcome that, for now he is still too cocky to understand you improve most by accepting you have a weakness and that’s what you should work on most.Mistermaumau21-04-2025
