The
European championships were favourable for the pure sprinters, and the finale saw a battle between three of the best, with
Fabio Jakobsen emerging victorious from what was a heavily contested day.
“It was a super strong team, we all do it together. We moved the last two laps. Everyone did a perfect turn, and that was necessary to stay ahead," Jakobsen said at the end of his race. The Netherlands didn't, as other teams, focus their resources on more than one rider, instead focusing on Jakobsen's chances as he was the country's main option.
“Danny [van Poppel] shows that he is a real lead out. He really puts me in the wheel of Tim [Merlier] and I can get over it," he described. "They are all professionals, and motivated. I can win, they know that. So I'm extremely grateful."
Belgium managed to lead Tim Merlier into prime position at the end, but the Dutchman had better timing to his sprint, and had a superior gear as he overtook Merlier and sprinted to what was a relatively comfortable win. Danny van Poppel almost rounded out the podium, riding into fourth place whilst helping him.
"Now we're going to have a party," he concluded. Jakobsen will likely race the BEMER Cyclassics and the Deutschland Tour in the coming week, prolonging his stay in Germany, which has with today's result been very nice to him.
