A sensational sprint earned
Fabio Jakobsen the win at the
European Championships, as he led the Dutch team in a furious bunch sprint where the Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team took a marvelous win.
The fast start saw only two riders go up the road, as Silvan Dillier and Lukas Postleberger took control of the race, a move however easy to control due to the low number of riders and high number of teams interested in having the race end in a sprint.
On the ascent to Eurasburg with over 100 kilometers to go the duo lost around a minute as the peloton rode a fast pace up it, with Matteo Trentin mainly sparking up the pace. Jan Tratnik and Marco Haller got a gap over the summit, briefly joined by Dries de Bondt and Rui Oliveira, however there was not enough intent and the group was quickly swallowed by the peloton.
The two riders were caught with 28 kilometers to go, as the peloton slowed saw it's pace rise. Inside the final four kilometers there was a small crash, and Stefan Bissegger surprised go solo, however it was an effort too difficult for a rider alone. Italy hit the final corner in front, however Belgium took over for the final sprint.
Tm Merlier was the first to launch his move, however Fabio Jakobsen came through with a high turn of speed and took the title in the end. He beat
Arnaud Démare and
Tim Merlier in the final sprint.
