From 2014 to 2016
Michael Matthews and
Caleb Ewan teamed up at the (now called)
Team Jayco AlUla. Both moved on to different teams to pursue goals over the next years, but now in 2024 the two will reunite back at their home team where they first grew into big World Tour figures.
"We've been talking over the past few days and Caleb is very enthusiastic. He is happy with what he has achieved with his current employer, but he is very pleased to come back to us and help us on our journey to winning more races," Matthews shared in an interview with GCN. "We have someone for the flat sprints and a more all-round sprinter, but it is nice to get someone who can constantly fight for victory."
Now Matthews is set to team up with both Ewan and Dylan Groenewegen. All three sprinters have different characteristics, and as has been shown recently be teams such as Soudal - Quick-Step and Alpecin-Deceuninck, it is fully possible to combine top sprinters and not have calendar conflicts. In the current modern cycling scene and taking into consideration the ambitions of Matthews, the Australian team should be able to keep all it's fast men happy - however that doesn't guarantee results.
"In tough races we will probably ride for me as a team. Suppose it does come together, we can still draw Caleb's card. After all, he is and remains one of the fastest in the world," 'Bling' believes. "He will wait for the sprint and I try to stay with the good climbing guys on the climbs. Caleb and I are completely different riders, but his arrival only makes our team stronger."
