Whilst most of the attention today is at the Criterium du Dauphiné today, with Primoz Roglic and Remco Evenepoel headlining the race; the World Tour peloton was competing elsewhere. Ahead of the Tour de Suisse, many climbers and classics riders tackled the GP des Kantons Aargau and 2024 breakthrough Maxim van Gils has added another victory to his palmarès.
The 173-kilometer long race had a final circuit which included two climbs, neither of them with much difficulty but definitely enough to put the sprinters under pressure, and provide many opportunities for attacks. As expected, this was the case.
Lidl-Trek did a lot of the work but in the final climbs they were not the ones attacking. In the final 500-meter long climb Marc Hirschi and Richard Carapaz went on the offensive but the still numerous group managed to bring it back. Mauro Schmid also made a late attempt which proved dangerous.
Thibau Nys and Andrea Bagioli were involved in a crash close to the finale, which ended Trek's chances of a win. A sprint was awaiting the reduced group, and in this Maxim van Gils took the victory. The Lotto Dstny rider has won for the third time this season, a palmarès which includes the World-Tour Eschborn-Frankfurt. He beat Alberto Bettiol and Roger Adrià to the line.
