Maxim Van Gils suspended by UCI for slapping rival during sprint

In the final sprint at the Japan Cup Criterium, towards the end of the 2023 road season, there were incredible scenes as Lotto Dstny sprinter Maxim Van Gils slapped a rival in the back on the head out of frustration. Now, he has found out his punishment.

The UCI have suspended the Belgian for 25 days as a result of his aggressive action towards sprint rival, Georgios Bouglas. Although he quickly posted an apology, almost as soon as the race finished, the 24-year-old was understandably heavily criticised for his actions, including by his own team.

"We say sorry for Maxim's behaviour, the team and Maxim would like to apologize for the incident at the end of the competition," read an official Lotto Dstny statement at the time.

Van Gils suspension will start on the 20th of January. Undoubtedly a talented rider, hopefully he will be able to put this debacle behind him and go from strength to strength in future.
