A tough day on the bike, the Australians may thrive despite the rainy weather. On stage 3 Michael Matthews and Kaden Groves both showed great legs and on stage 5 they could thrive once again due to the overall difficulty of the day.
"It's something for the sprinters who can climb a climb. It could be for the breakaway, but I expect a sprint," Jayco AlUla DS Pieter Weening said at the start of the day. "However, it will be an aggressive race, where we have to be sharp from the start."
The Australian team pushed the pace hard in the stage to Melfi, dropping all sprinters but Mads Pedersen and Kaden Groves. The uphill drag to the line saw 'Bling' take the win however, a much needed and highly-motivating triumph which takes off the weight from the team's shoulders.
"The weather will make it even harder," Kaden Groves told CyclingPro.net. "Some riders will go for the breakaway, but not us. As a team we will try to organize and let it come down to a sprint."
