Gazprom - Rusvelo have struck gold today at the UAE Tour where, besides confirming their intermediate sprint jersey and having Dmitry Strakhov in striking distance of the points jersey, they got a stage win that was completely unexpected as an added reward.
"Today I went into the breakaway to help my teammates. I also had a goal to try to attack from the breakaway in the final kilometres. On the kilometer 100 we had only a 1-minute advantage. It was hard to imagine that we will make it to the finish. It is unbelievable," Vacek said after the finish.
The Russian team head for the sixth stage of the UAE Tour with three riders at the head of the race again, in a group of six, with Pavel Kochetkov, Dmitry Strakhov and Mathias Vacek. The group collaborated well and kept their small gap almost intact throughout the final hour of racing miraculously to fight between themselves for the stage win. In the final sprint the Czech rider averaged more than 1400 watts for 10 second according to Velon, becoming the second youngest ever riders winning a World Tour stage, behind only Remco Evenepoel.
He added: "I am very happy. We worked really hard and it is an amazing feeling to win! I think we have a great team right now with everyone being ready at their maximum. I would like to thank our team partners for their support!"
Tomorrow Strakhov is in with a shot of taking the points jersey for Jasper Philipsen as he sits just 7 points behind, however Alpecin - Fenix are surely aware of the situation.
