Marianne Vos is one of four selected Dutch women who will represent their national colours in the road race on Sunday. The weight of responsiblity is on Lorena Wiebes' shoulders this time around, but that doesn't make the job for Vos any easier. And who knows, if things unfold in a favorable manner, she could get a chance to go for her own result.
It'll be the fifth
Olympic Games start for the former three-time world champion and Olympic champion from London 2012. "The Games always have a huge impact. As an athlete, it's still magical to experience. The highs and lows, everything is part of it. It's very special. I'm not so concerned with the fact that it's my fifth, I'm mainly concerned with Paris," she confirms to
WielerFlits.
At the age of 37, Vos seemed to be in one of her best shapes ever this spring: "It’s great to be able to compete at this level and in this way again. To be able to do the cycling game, the preparation and training as you want again. I don’t know if 'completely back' is the right term, but I’m happy to be here."
What does Vos expect from Paris in concrete terms? "It is a very interesting course, where different scenarios are possible. That makes it very special. It is also difficult, you can discuss a thousand scenarios and probably another scenario will become reality. But that is precisely what makes cycling so beautiful, a bit of the unpredictability. I like it."
"With the Netherlands, we are going for the most ideal scenario for a chance at gold. In what kind of scenario that is, we will see during the race. With Wiebes, we have an incredibly sharp pawn for the final sprint as an advanced pawn. How that will manifest itself during the race, we will see."
