Sad to report that @solermarc93 suffered a crash on the final descent of stage 2 of #Itzulia2023 today. He was taken to hospital where he was diagnosed with a fractured thumb and will undergo further tests this evening. Ánimo Marc 🙏 #WeAreUAE
Following the frantic finale of stage two at the Itzulia Basque Country, numerous riders including stage winner Ide Schelling and David Gaudu criticised the dangerous, downhill run to the line, one that saw Marc Soler crash. A crash that has forced him too abandon.
"This was really too dangerous," said Ide Schelling following his victory on stage two of the Itzulia Basque Country. Whilst David Gaudu agreed. "We're not going to hide it, it was a bit of a shameful finale," the Groupama-FDJ leader declared post stage.
Now it seems that they were indeed correct to be concerned as UAE Team Emirates rider, Marc Soler being forced to withdraw from the race after a crash he suffered whilst tackling the final descent of the day. According to an announcement made by his team's official Twitter account, Soler was diagnosed with "a fractured thumb and will undergo further tests."
