- If the race explodes for a second time on the Cipressa and the peloton have absolutely no chance of getting back (reducing the influence of the Poggio on the race) then I think the route is getting a bit outdated (because the sprinters no longer have any chance) and needs an update. That could be to replace the Cipressa climb with the Civezza (a climb identical in length and gradient to it, but a bit further up the coast, so there are 14 flat km rather than 9 between it and the Poggio). Milano-Sanremo has always been for the sprinters and the very daring puncheurs - if the blueprint of van der Poel, Pogačar and Ganna becomes the norm, it'll be a given that the puncheurs will win (giving exciting racing but not as much as the chase of the peloton did). Preserving the races's identity is more important than the tradition of the route.
- I've seen it before.. TP/UAE will drop the entire peloton, except MVDP, who will stick to his wheels and let him burn his matches.. then finish him off in the final sprint. It's like he's playing domestique to MVDP. The thing is MSR is a sprinter's classic. MVDP outkicks TP by 10 kgs. The climbs are not long enough and not hard enough for climbing ability to be a factor. Unless he can do ala Matej Mohoric, who dropped the peloton on the descent.
- Ask Tadej to have a go at the hour record so we can see how bs all those wins were.
- so many of Eddy’s wins were b.s. crits. win total is meaningless
- I’d be interested to hear more on the Tramadol.
Crashes are obviously due to a host of reasons so all those mentioned play their role, am a little surprised speed wasn’t developed further, it obviously has a big effect, not the speed itself but the fact many riders are far more stressed, desperate and on their limits so often compared to the days when they were able to ride most of a race at chatting speed before someone launched the action. Today there’s always someone ratcheting up the pace from almost go, forcing everyone to work all day.
- A good analysis even if the RM no longer really fits since quite a while (the myth lives on though but EVEN in the CL they may finally have lost their touch).
Which brings me to the fascinating history of FCB during the Franco 30s, the decade the prepared their 11-1 « loss » to RM after a first leg 3-0 win.
Did you know the Italian air force bombed Barcelona killing 3000 in 1938, hitting the club, the civil war led to half the team asking for asylum with some others left to fight in the civil war.
Winning then was like Iran beating the US at the WC this summer.
Despite that, head to head comparison has RM with 106 vs 105, the next match could be the official end of their « superiority » and the mid-term momentum isn’t in their favour.
- Spring cleaning?
Everyone brings something but it won’t help anyone else.
- The peloton during Merck's era can't be compared to the modern era peloton.
- Bernal is on his way out.
