Taking just the second professional win of his career, Ide Schelling was more keen to talk about the dangerous, downhill run in to the line than his actual victory following stage two of the Itzulia Basque Country.
"It is really unbelievable that the UCI has approved this," a fired-up Schelling criticised in his post-race interview. "This was really too dangerous. There were already falls in the last descent, luckily I was able to avoid them. The last climb wasn't super hard, so we rode into the last descent with a full peloton."
"The last kilometer was still okay, but that last descent was simply not possible," the BORA - hansgrohe rider continued. "I don't think most teams believed in a sprint, but this climb on the last axis is not too hard."
Despite his frustration, alongside the stage win, Schelling also takes to overall lead in the general classification which will surely allow the 25-year-old Dutchman to enjoy the biggest win of his career to date. "I'm extremely happy about that," he concludes.
