Fabio Jakobsen crashed hard in the final of the fourth stage. The Dutchman immediately paid the price for this at the very beginning of the fifth stage of the Tour de France, one that passed through the Pyrenees. Jakobsen had to let go of peloton early, after which he had to chase. In the end, the European champion crossed the line within the time cut.
"My legs exploded, but luckily Mørkøv was able to stay with me and then we came back to a larger group. There was also Mark Cavendish with a few teammates. Mark is a friend of mine. Luckily I was in that group with him. We need eachother. In the sprints as an opponent, but also on days like today to get to the finish together. I am grateful to all those guys. It really feels like together. I'm glad we're here," the AD quotes Jakobsen.
The fact that he let go very early after the start of the stage caused some concern among his fans. He still got through it though. "It was on that track of that coarse tarmac. So I'm wide open. Last night I didn't sleep well. Half way through the night I even went out again. Well, you have to start anyway. This is not one of my best days, but they are part of it. I hope the wounds heal quickly and the bruises recover. So that I can stay in the Tour, because I don't want to go home. I never give up."
