On an already hectic and frantic opening to stage 15 at the Tour de France on Sunday, the peloton was sent into chaos after a fan who was not paying attention stuck out their arm, making contact with Jumbo-Visma's Sepp Kuss and causing a mass crash.
Now, according to reports by Reuters, which cites a source with direct knowledge of the matter, Jumbo-Visma are having an internal discussion over whether or not to press charges on the fan who has since been identified as a resident of Annecy, the region of France in which the crash took place.
"The team might do. We’ll find out how and when," said a spokesperson of the Dutch-based team when asked whether or not the team intend to press charges. It is believed that the French gendarmerie will not arrest the person in question unless either Kuss or Jumbo-Visma as a whole do decide to take matters further as per French legal procedures.
Speaking after the incident took place, Kuss revealed his frustration on the happenings. “There was a spectator leaning into the road, I guess. It just happened suddenly and that’s part of the Tour, there are a lot of people,” Kuss said of the crash. “Ideally that wouldn’t happen, but it’s the biggest bike race in the world and a lot of people don’t know exactly what’s going on. There was a narrowing in a town. We were just trying to slow down the peloton to let the break go and then just on the side unfortunately, somebody wanted to get a selfie. I didn’t really see it coming.”
They are already unpopular by being the winner of the TDF and having a very strong team that dictates the pace ion a stage. They were unpopular when Roglic pressed with his accusations about Wright when he was right. Now with going after the fan that caused the crash, they might make themselves even more unpopular. Richard Plugge sure does not know how to make friends among the masses
I fail to see how suing someone (who is obviously ignorant and a bad fan) for ruining the race would be a bad PR move
