After years of trying without much luck, Victor Campenaerts finally managed to secure victory on a stage of the Tour de France in 2024, doing so on stage 18 ahead of Matteo Vercher and Michal Kwiatkowski in Barcelonnette.
With Campenaerts Tour de France stage win adding to a Giro d'Italia triumph from the 2021 edition of the Italian Grand Tour, only a stage of the Vuelta a Espana is missing from the Belgian's palmares. "Tomorrow I'll really start again, with a four-hour ride. The Vuelta starts with a flat time trial. Who knows, I might even be able to wear the leader's jersey for a while, although it won't be easy if Joshua Tarling also descends to Spain," Campenaerts tells Het Nieuwsblad. "It would be great if I could win a stage in all three major tours. But we are also focusing on a good classification for Lennert Van Eetvelt. He is a great talent and could possibly ride in the top ten."
In truth, the 2024 Tour de France was looking at being a fairly average one for Lotto Dstny. Following Campenaerts brilliant breakaway stage win however, the Grand Tour has undoubtedly proven a success for the Belgian-based outfit.
"I was so happy when I got home. Finally seeing my son and girlfriend again. Not having to ride for a while, just eating fries. It's probably not the best idea, but it helps to get some mental rest," Campenaerts reflects, also noting the epic post-Tour de France celebrations within the team. "We celebrated that well, with a few beers. Arnaud De Lie and I were the last ones left at seven in the morning. It's a shame that Netflix didn't film with us, because you'll find the best stories there anyway. But hey, it probably wouldn't be able to handle that many views. It's not the best combination, but I liked to have a beer anyway!"
