“And then the same with the
Tour de France. Jonas Vingegaard is his biggest rival and I think if he’s not on the start line that does change the whole Tour for me. Because it just makes Pogacar, like here, the out and out favourite," White continues. “But as we know, things can go nasty pretty quickly. It only takes one touch of wheels, one crash, one accident, and your whole season gets turned upside down.”
White also believes that if Pogacar was to be successful in his quest to emulate Pantani, it would not only be a piece of cycling history but would benefit the future of the sport. "I think he’s a very good ambassador for our sport, internationally. For him to pull off a feat like the Giro-Tour double, which hasn’t been done in such a long time, I think it will only gain more publicity for our sport globally," White explains. “So good luck to him. It’s a big challenge. Anyone who’s won a grand tour knows that besides all the preparation and teamwork and planning that goes into these grand tours, you do need that element of luck. Otherwise, things can go wrong quickly.”
