"It was not the intention that Yves would ride away" - Lack of communication costs Soudal - Quick-Step victory at Classic Brugge-De Panne

A frustrated Fabio Jakobsen had to settle for a fifth placed finish at Classic Brugge-de Panne, following a miscommunication within the Soudal - Quick-Step team during the chaotic run in.

Following the dramatic, echelon effected finish at Classic Brugge-De Panne, a visibly disappointed Jakobsen, was quickly onto the team bus without a word to the media. Teammate Yves Lampaert, third placed finisher on the day, put the missed opportunity down to a simple yet avoidable miscommunication.

“We wanted to turn into the corner with the entire team and then continue, but they were probably a bit too far. That was the misery," Lampaert explained following the race. "Due to a bit of miscommunication we are indeed a bit too far on that narrow track, we weren't with that. Yves went at that moment, but Philipsen took over while we were just too far," Bert Van Lerberghe agreed.

“It was not the intention that Yves would ride away, it was the intention that we would ride for Fabio. That was our best chance, I think," he continues. "I didn't speak to Fabio either, but we knew it was a bad situation for us. There were two fast men at the front, which Yves normally couldn't beat."
