As the cycling world is still trying to come to terms with the sad news of the untimely passing of Davide Rebellin, the Italian's former teammate Johan Museeuw, has spoken on the tragedy. “It is tragic that his passion cost him his life.”
Museeuw who rode with Rebellin at the Italian team GB-MG Maglificio between 1993 and 1994 spoke to Sporza on fond memories shared with his friend. "In the spring I went on two more bike rides with him on Mallorca. We have the same disease, we both can't stop cycling."
According to the now 57-year-old Belgian, Rebellin wasn't "the typical Italian." Expanding on this Museeuw continues "He did join us at the table in the evenings, mainly listened and had a drink with us. But it also remained with one glass. That was his lifestyle: being sober.”
Despite the fact Rebellin achieved victories at races such as Liège-Bastogne-Liège and the Amstel Gold Race, Museeuw was quick to point out how the modest Italian would always put the team first. "Rebellin was content with a helping role deep into the finale. If the tactics allowed, he could also win." Museeuw says. "His personality also played a role in that. You never saw Rebellin on course, because he didn't stand out. The opposition forgot about him and with his fast finish he regularly finished it in a small group.”
