The European Championship circuit largely consists of a local circuit on the VAM mountain, the former waste dump that became a bit higher for this European Championship: in the past the road went up to a height of 48 meters, now it is 63 meters.
"That extra bit makes it more difficult, but it is not what will necessarily make the difference," Belgian coach Sven Vanthourenhout reads the local circuit. "It is mainly the circuit itself: the alternation of narrow and wider roads, the fight to be at the front, constant positioning. That will be the deciding factor at the end. That accumulation of nervousness will cause fatigue deep into the final."
Vanthourenhout estimates the run-up in an interview with Sporza. "From wide to narrow, in and out of villages. Anyone who knows races in the Netherlands knows that the danger of echelons can always lie behind one bend or another."
"The wind no longer blows as hard as in Wednesday's time trials, but you always keep in mind that you are racing on Dutch roads. That automatically creates a certain tension in the peloton."
