Thibau Nys has taken his seventh win of the season, in less than four months. The
Lidl-Trek rider has won in every single stage-race he took part on this year and right on the first attempt he has succeeded in continuing this run at the
Tour de Pologne.
“The past few months I have shown that these types of finishes suit me. I can really reach a top level in a strong peloton," Nys said in a post-race interview. "So I know what it takes to win a stage like this. At the same time, it also creates tension because you know how tough it will be. But I did it again, it is unbelievable". Nys had to overcome a late crash to return to the peloton and contest for a result.
UAE Team Emirates and Team Visma | Lease a Bike battled in the first kilometers of the climb whilst the peloton was led by EF Education-EasyPost. Nys' Trek didn't have the manpower to reel in the attack from Jan Christen and Wilco Kelderman but the Belgian rode the wheels until the perfect time. In the final 10% drag to the line he burst away from the GC group to take a very strong win, comfortably over Kelderman and Lukas Nerurkar. He also takes the race lead after this result.
“If you had told me this before the season, that I would win a stage in every stage race I ride, I would have laughed at you," he continues. "This is the result of a lot of hard work. The same as if you had told me five years ago that I would now win stages in the WorldTour".
He was also asked about cyclocross and if his ambitions change due to his success on the road. “I enjoy both worlds. I want to keep doing this. My heart is still with cyclocross, I am far from finished there," he responded.
