Thibau Nys does it again! Lidl-Trek rider wins first Tour de Pologne stage as Jonas Vingegaard loses time

The opening day of the Tour de Pologne was fit for the puncheurs and it delivered. It was an exciting finale with a few attacks and differences; Thibau Nys was the strongest and managed to take another win to complement an already luxurious season.

The first day of the race always offers up at least a jersey and the chance for a surprise victory and lead in the overall classification, so it's always a day with motivated riders looking to attack. In the day's breakaway were 4 riders: Jan Maas, Szymon Sajnok, Michal Paluta and Norbert Banaszek.

The quartet never enjoyed a big lead over the peloton that would allow it many hopes, and into the final kilometers of the stage only half survived and so Maas and Paluta rode into the penultimate climb of the day by themselves. Ultimately, they were caught by the peloton with 9 kilometers to go on a day where the likes of Thibau Nys and Andrea Bagioli went down.

With 5 kilometers to go Soudal - Quick-Step looked to surprise as Pepijn Reinderink launched a move off the front. He was caught shortly after though as Visma began to put in a very hard pace at the front, looking to burn off the explosive riders ahead of the final 10% ramp to the finish. With 2 kilometers to go Jan Christen launched an attack and Wilco Kelderman responded.

Christen, without collaboration, accelerated several more times as the peloton creeped in close behind. With 600 meters to go he attacked and Kelderman then went over the top. Thibau Nys launched a powerful acceleration from the peloton, without a response and soared to a brilliant stage win. Wilco Kelderman and Lukas Nerurkar were second and third 3 seconds behind, Jonas Vingegaard fourth at 6 seconds.
