Well into the third week of the first Grand Tour of his career, Marijn van den Berg showed he still has good legs on stage 19, coming as close as he yet has to a stage win by coming 3rd in a bunch sprint in Iscar.
“Of course you go for more, but there was a big crash and I was a bit behind,” recapped the EF Education-EasyPost sprinter in his post-stage interview. “I tried to move up. The guys tried to do a lead-out, but I wasn't in the wheels. That was a pity. But the sprint itself was pretty good, I think. I was just sitting a bit too far back.”
Alberto Dainese prevailed in the sprint, edging out Filippo Ganna in the throw for the line. For the sprinters, one more opportunity remains at the 2023 Vuelta a Espana. With a lumpy stage 20 ideal for the breakaway, stage 21 in Madrid marks the final chance for van den Berg to taste glory in his debut Grand Tour.
“It was at the front of the pack, so a lot of guys crashed. I hope everyone is okay. I can pass it, but I lost some places," he concludes. “Tomorrow will be about survival and then I will try again on Sunday. But we're getting closer.”
