Having powered to victory in the first two bunch sprints of the 2023
Vuelta a Espana,
Kaden Groves has been unable to replicate that success in the following sprints. On stage 19 it was a late crash that ruined the Aussie's plans.
“Luckily I have no injuries,” he said in a post-stage interview with Eurosport. “I was still able to click out of my pedal and avoid a fall. I don't know how, but in the end I was running and I managed to stay upright. I didn't see exactly what happened. I think some wheels or handlebars touched each other. I saw that riders from Team DSM-Firmenich and my teammate Tobias Bayer were involved."
In Groves' absence, it was
Filippo Ganna and
Alberto Dainese who battled it out for the win with Dainese being the man to emerge victorious. For the sprinters, one more chance remains with an expected bunch sprint on stage 21 in Madrid.
“It's disappointing not to be able to sprint. Jason Osborne and Jimmy Janssens were super strong," laments Groves. “I really wanted to win my third stage today. Now we have to wait until Sunday. There is still a chance, I feel good. I would really like to sprint again on Sunday."
