Although his general classification challenge fell flat in the second week, it's hard to say Remco Evenepoel hasn't had a successful Vuelta a Espana. But can it get even better? The Soudal - Quick-Step leader will be trying hard for a fourth stage win on stage 20.
On stage 19, it was a day of saving energy for Evenepoel. With the King of the Mountains classification sewn up and three stage wins in the bag, nothing was really on offer for the Belgian on stage 19. "It was a bit annoying with the wind coming from the side, so the peloton was always a bit stressed out, but in the end it was a quiet day and a good day to try to recover from yesterday’s effort," he recaps to the Vuelta a Espana's website.
"At one point, I saw Casper Pedersen drop back. I thought he was involved in the crash but apparently not so it was a bit of a strange situation," Evenepoel continues. "He probably tried to do his best and he will get another chance on Sunday."
Stage 20 has breakaway written all over it and for Evenepoel it's yet another chance at success. "It depends on how the start will be. We’ll see because today I felt quite tired from the last two days. I hope I can recover well over the night and we’ll see about tomorrow," he previews. "The good thing is I don’t have to think about the mountain jersey anymore. So it’s full focus on the stage win. It’s a pretty hard and long day to finish the Vuelta."
