Although Charlotte Kool may have overtaken her in the final few metres to snatch the stage win, Marianne Vos was compensated by taking control of the Red Jersey as the overall leader at La Vuelta Femenina.
“Everyone is fresh and motivated to go for the stage win. Quite a bit happened, but not really. A leading group rode away and the peloton kept that gap well under control," Vos recalls in a post-race interview taken immediately after the stage. "It was mainly about staying in position. I am very happy with how my teammates rode and guided me off safely in the final."
Taking over the race lead from her teammate Anna Henderson after Jumbo-Visma emerged victorious from the opening stage team time-trial, Vos has now held both the Yellow Jersey at the Tour de France Femmes plus now, the Red Jersey of La Vuelta Femenina.
"In the end I went for the sprint," Vos explains. "It was not my goal to take the leader's jersey, I just had my eyes on the stage victory. Still, it's always great to keep the jersey in the team and luckily there's another chance right away."
