Charlotte Kool edges out Marianne Vos in sprint finish on stage 2 of La Vuelta Femenina

Charlotte Kool has taken victory ahead of Marianne Vos in a sprint finish on the second stage of La Vuelta Femenina. Vos however was able to boast the overall the lead of the race as a consolation.

Stage 2 of La Vuelta Femenina was expected to be an opportunity for the sprinters with the riders taking on a flat 105-kilometre stage between Orihuela and Pilar de la Horadada. Nevertheless, an initial four-rider group formed an early breakaway.

As the peloton began to sit very dangerously on the shoulder of the breakaway, the lead group of four became a duo with just Coralie Demay and Iurani Blanco left up ahead.

With just 32 seconds lead with 40kms to go the writing was on the wall however as the peloton with the intermediate sprint in mind was turning on the gas and with 37km left they were caught.

Femke Markus was the winner of the intermediate sprint and took the time bonuses on offer.

With the peloton all back together the 2nd stage of La Vuelta Femenina 2023 was to be decided by a sprint finish.

Team SD Worx, UAE-ADQ and Team DSM were all battling it out for the front of the peloton but Chloe Dygert decided to launch a long move.

Marianne Vos caught Dygert just before the line but as the Dutchwoman then hesitated, Charlotte Kool came around Vos and took the victory for herself.
