Maxim Van Gils came close to winning the stage 2 of Tour of Oman and becoming the leader of the general classification. The Lotto-Dstny rider likes this type of uphill finishes, and he revealed that he had studied this hill.
"Today was a very good opportunity. I had studied the course well. I knew perfectly what the last kilometre looked like, but I came just a little short to follow Herrada. That's a shame, though. Nevertheless, I did want to win. I finish second, which is close, but also far away. I hope to do better soon, because then it's bingo!", Van Gils said in the post race interview.

Maxim Van Gils started last season winning in the Middle East where he conquered Saudi Tour a race that has some similarities with Tour of Oman. Now in 2023 he feels he isn't at the top shape but is confident that will continue doing well here.
"I am satisfied with my feeling though. I have a good fitness to catch compared to last season. I didn't really peak at it, last year I did", Van Gils concluded.
