Fabio Jakobsen took a stage win at the Vuelta a San Juan, however it wasn't a race that went according to plan. The end of the Argentinian trip ended on a bad note as Jakobsen sprinted to second on the final day after getting hit in the face with a phone in the middle of the sprint.
“I should have followed Mørkøv, but hesitated for one second and stayed with the other sprinters," Jakobsen recalls. "I thought Nizzolo was going to slide to the left, but I should have known better and drove too tight along the boarding."
The European Champions' decisions in the final meters caused him to go against the barriers, and although he managed to avoid crashing the lack of protection saw someone from the crowd lose their phone as it hit the Dutchman mid-sprint. It was a terrifying moment, specially taking into consideration how Jakobsen has in the past crashed in similar conditions.
“Someone reached out there with a phone. I think a lot of people got a déjà vu after that stage in the Tour of Poland. This was partly my own fault, but there was room. I hadn't seen the hand," Jakobsen said. He had some bruising on his face following the stage but was lucky to avoid bigger injuries.
“I have a cut and it is a bit thick, but this could have been much worse. Fortunately, it ends well," Jakobsen concluded. He will resume competition in mid-February in Portugal now as he tackles the Figueira Champions Classic and the Volta ao Algarve.
