Team DSM have had a storming 24 hours with a whole three wins. Two of those came from Sam Welsford who swept clean the final two sprint stages of the Vuelta a San Juan to wrap off a tremendous week.
“I can't believe it," the 27-year old said following the end of the Argentinian race. "The guys were so good in the last lap, they looked after me great. At the beginning of the last kilometer we were still with five. It is fantastic how well we practiced here at the end of the week.”
The finale saw Remco Evenepoel on the attack which cost firepower from several teams. Not DSM though who kept their leadout fresh for the final minutes of racing and delivered Welsford toa strong position. “We knew it would go very fast in the last lap. This race is incredibly fast and the audience made an incredible amount of noise. We could barely hear each other talk." he describes.
Despite the early moves of Michael Morkov and Giacomo Nizzolo, Welsford had the speed to kick in the final meters and took a confident win ahead of Fabio Jakobsen, and has established himself amongst the fastest in the peloton. "I want to thank all the fans here. It was an incredible week that I will never forget.”
“This is very special for me and the team. Winning once is nice, but to do it again right away is even more fun. The fact that the boys in Australia were also able to win shows what we are capable of as a team. This is a great start to the season," Welsford concluded.
