"I don't realize that I am world champion yet" - Shock for Milesi as he conquers world title in the under-23 men's time-trial

Lorenzo Milesi was 10th last year at the under-23 time-trial World Championships but this year he jumped straight to gold. The Team DSM - Firmenich gave Italy the gold medal on the 36-kilometer route, surprising to beat pre-race favourite Alec Segaert.

“This is incredible. This course was brutal and the last kilometer was crazy and very painful. I mainly looked at Segaert. It was so close and exciting the whole time," the 21-year old said. He was not a huge favourite coming into the race, but was an outsider to take into consideration. The effort was long and that favoured Milesi, who has raced throughout most of the season at World Tour level and came in with incredible legs to Stirling.

This afternoon he assembled all his strengths and put in the ride of his career, to take a very important win. Milesi set a very strong time before some of the main favourites were yet to finish and then managed to hold on to the hot seat in incredible fashion. He beat Alec Segaert by 11 seconds with the duo being ahead of the rest by almost a full minute.

“I went full steam ahead from the start. The power just had to come out," he described. "It was important in the opening phase to go hard there because of the headwind. So I didn't manage it, I just went full. During my time trial I thought about Segaert all the time, because he was the favourite. That's why I wanted to go full. I don't realize that I am world champion yet, I need a moment for that."
