Matej Mohoric has put on a strong performance at the
E3 Saxo Classic. He seemed to be the strongest match for van Aert, van der Poel and Pogacar, and his performance motivates him towards a career-best result at
Tour of Flanders.
"I was close to leaving with the top three. When the race exploded on the Taaienberg, I was too far behind and had to expend a lot of energy to come back up. If I had given less at that time- there, maybe - but it's still a maybe - that I could have accompanied them on the Oude Kwaremont," Mohoric argued in a post-race interview. "But it's clear that it was the three strongest in front."
Tactically astute, Mohoric anticipated the attack of van der Poel which saw the trio join the head of the race. He then couldn't keep up in the final steep bergs of the race and was caught by the chasing group. He still had another acceleration in his legs as he joined the attacking riders from that group later on, but his efforts cost him dearly and he rolled over the line in seventh place. However good sensations were felt for the Slovenian.
"I feel my best and I'm confident that I can get on the podium if the stars align. The three who made it to the podium today are the strongest, but in these races, a lot of things can happen," he continued. "There can be accidents, crashes, so maybe in one of these Flandriennes we will be lucky and we can get a victory or at least get a podium." This Sunday Mohoric takes part in Gent-Wevelgem, the final preparation race for the cobbled monuments.
