Winner of the first mass sprint in the third stage, Biniam Girmay wasn't able to get into the mix for stage win in Saint Vulbas after the Eritrean found himself closed far from the front. But the Intermarché - Wanty sprinter has not reason to be sad, as he takes Jonas Abrahamsen's green jersey. With that, he becomes the first black African to wear the Maglia Cicclamino at the Tour de France.
"It was part of the plan to try to take the green jersey today," said Girmay at the finish of the stage. "Of course, I would have preferred a different result in the sprint, but it's great. It's a very nice jersey, I love this colour. Everything is going really well, I was able to win a stage and this time I was still quite close. And I know there will be other opportunities."
The Eritrean history-maker could only follow his opponent Mark Cavendish writing his own history from afar. "Mark Cavendish, I saw him win races when I was about ten years old and I always dreamed of being like him. So to be in the race where he breaks the record, it makes me very happy, I'm happy for him. He just made history... He's my legend, I'm super happy for him that he won this stage. We know, he's the best sprinter in the world."
