Mark Cavendish makes HISTORY! 35 Tour de France wins as he wins stage 5 sprint

Mark Cavendish has won stage 5 of the Tour de France. This is another victory in his extensive palmarès but perhaps the most important of his entire career, as he finally achieved the ultimate record of 35 wins in the race.

The start of the day was another very calm and slow one, with no-one intending on launching a breakaway from the get go - not the first time this happens this week. However eventually, after 30 kilometers of racing, Clément Russo and Mattéo Vercher attacked off the front and gained a time gap of around 4 minutes.

With 60 kilometers to go there was a crash involving a few riders, including Bahrain - Victorious duo Pello Bilbao and Matej Mohoric. Tadej Pogacar just barely managed to avoid it. Mads Pedersen won the intermediate sprint in the peloton in front of Sam Bennett and Biniam Girmay.

The pace then increased as the rain began to fall and tension was quite present. The pace slowly increased all the way into the final kilometers as teams began to prepare for the sprint.

Lotto Dstny and Alpecin-Deceuninck were among the teams carrying the most numbers into the final kilometers but in the final kilometer it was total chaos again. Pascal Ackermann was the first to launch the sprint but from the wheel came Mark Cavendish with speed. He moved to the left significantly but didn't hamper anyone's movement, and was able to hold off Jasper Philipsen to win the stage. Alexander Kristoff sprinted to third on the day.
