Jonas Vingegaard is racing the Tour de France and that has already been officially confirmed by Team Visma | Lease a Bike. The Dutch team is still training at altitude in the French Alps, but has already decided on their '8' and also unveiled their new jersey ahead of the race.
"I am excited to start the Tour. The last few months have not always been easy, but I thank my family and Team Visma | Lease a Bike for their unwavering support," Vingegaard said in a press release issued by the team. "We have worked together to get to this moment, and of course, I am very excited to see where I stand. I feel good and very motivated." This is a great moment for the two-time defending champion, who has spent the last two and a half months resting and training in order to try and recover his best level.
A lengthy mission against time, as Vingegaard crashed out of Itzulia Basque Country suffering injuries which have sidelined him ever since. He managed to return to the bike, get back to training, to the time-trial bike... And is putting in quality work ahead of the Tour, with a few more days still left of hard training before making the trip to Florence where he will have the number 1 on his back.
"I am very proud of Jonas and the coaching team," team DS Merijn Zeeman said of the Dane. "He is coming back from a serious injury. In the last few weeks, he has shown what a champion he is, both mentally and physically. Of course, we don't know how far he can go yet. We are being cautious because he has not been able to race, and his preparation has been less than ideal, to say the least. But he will be there, healthy and motivated."
