For the second time in his career, Wout van Aert was forced to settle for second in the World Championship road race. On their 'The Move' podcast, Lance Armstrong, George Hincapie and Johan Bruyneel place the blame at Jumbo-Visma's door.
"Van Aert is a great rider, but his qualities as a rider are not translated into results. He's only won two races this season, just two… and he's such a great rider," said Bruyneel, wondering why the Belgian isn't more successful. "He has won one Monument with Milan-Sanremo. In the meantime, van der Poel has twice won the Tour of Flanders, Milan-Sanremo, Paris-Roubaix and now the World Championship. The man is a killer. I'm not saying one is better than the other, they are very similar. For one reason or another, however, it is often van der Poel who wins and van Aert who finishes second."
Hincapie however, believes that he may have found the answer as to why van Aert can't seem to get the wins his immense talent deserves. "The run-up of the two to the World Championship was completely different. Van Aert was the workhorse for Jumbo-Visma in the Tour de France; he had to give everything every day," he explains. "Van der Poel - perhaps a little ill - was actually training in the Tour, after which he started the World Cup in peak form. Because of that run-up, I don't think it's fair to say that Van der Poel is the better rider."
Armstrong meanwhile was shocked it had been so long since a Dutchman had been crowned the champion of the world. "In the Tour you could see that he was not well, that he was struggling with some illness. But today was the day, wow! He is the first man to win both the cyclocross and road World Championships within a year," he says. "The Netherlands is a superpower in cycling , but the last time they won was with Joop Zoetemelk, in 1985!"
