Before this week, Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe's Jordi Meeus had just the one World Tour win in his entire career. After arguably the best few days of his career however, the Belgian sprinter has now tripled his tally thanks to victories at the Tour de Suisse and the inaugural edition of the Copenhagen Sprint.
Abandoning the Tour de Suisse ahead of stage 7, Meeus headed straight on a flight to Denmark, ready for this Sunday afternoon. It proved an inspired decision for the 26-year-old too as he stormed to a very impressive win in Copenhagen, writing his name into the history books as the first ever winner of the newly-introduced World Tour race.
"After six tough days of racing in Switzerland, I felt a bit tired, but I still had some power left in the legs," Meeus reflected in a post-stage press release on the official website of the Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe team afterwards.
"The breakaway group was pretty strong, and we knew it wouldn’t be easy to bring them back on the local circuit. But my team, together with a few others, did a great job," Meeus analyses of the race itself. "The final was extremely demanding and really hectic. Ideally, I would have been a few positions further up going into the last corner. But I also knew there was a headwind, and I hoped the sprint would open up — which it did perfectly. I still had a good kick, and I’m really happy I could take the win.”
