After an exciting and disputed stage at the
Tour Colombia 2024,
Fernando Gaviria spoke about his second place behind
Mark Cavendish in a tight and, for some, controversial sprint. Gaviria, known for his speed and agility in the sprints, acknowledged the demanding effort of the day and stressed the importance of providing a good show for the fans.
"It was a hard pace the whole stage, quite demanding both for me and my teammates," commented Gaviria, reflecting on the intensity of the course. Despite the difficulties, the team managed to prepare for the final sprint, fulfilling the main objective of delivering an exciting competition. "We did a good sprint and they beat us, we can't say anything" admitted the Colombian.
As for his duel with Cavendish in the final meters, Gaviria acknowledged the skill and speed of his British rival. "We were both face to face, Mark and I, and he was faster. Nothing to do," he expressed sincerely. Gaviria's humility and sportsmanship were evident as he accepted defeat and gave credit to his opponent.
"In the end, you learn to lose because there are many more times you lose than I've won," Gaviria reflected. He also praised Cavendish as both a rider and a person, recalling a past encounter. "Cavendish is an excellent rider and an even better person. Eight years ago I even went to dinner at his house," he revealed, highlighting the friendly relationship between them.
Finally, Gaviria expressed his joy for Cavendish's triumph and recognized the effort of the British rider in his preparation for the race. "He came to train in Colombia, he spent three weeks before the race at altitude to prepare well, he deserved to take a win here," he said, showing his respect and admiration for his colleague.
