Arguably no rider has started the 2024 season displaying better form than
Lidl-Trek's
Mads Pedersen. In his latest show of force, the Dane sprinted to victory on stage 1 of the
Tour de la Provence in France.
"It was a difficult day, the rain and the cold don't make things easier for anyone. There was a very strong breakaway in front, who raced intelligently, so Tim Declercq and Julien Bernard had to work hard to catch up with them. I'm really proud of the team," assessed the 28-year-old in his post-stage interview.
After victory in yesterday's prologue and now a sprint win on the 1st stage proper, Pedersen is already in a commanding position in the general classification.
"Alex Kirsch managed to stretch the peloton into a single line in the last kilometre while Ryan Gibbons protected me, which allowed me to do a good sprint. It was quite long because we had created a small gap in the last corner but we came out well. We still have to get to know each other, it's a whole new train, but it's a good start," Pedersen concludes. “We will try to keep the leader’s jersey, the weather will work in our favour tomorrow.”
