In 2019 he took the first win of his pro career in the Tour de la Provence. A full circle was done in the meantime, as Filippo Ganna took win number eighteen on the same race, after building a wildly successful career on the road.
"To come back to Provence and win again is really really nice. My first victory for a WorldTour team I did here so it’s nice to come back. It’s nice to see another win after three or four days and it’s a good start to the season. Now we look to the next stages to improve and work well with the team and we cross our fingers," Ganna said after the stage in a team update.
The Italian soared through the 7.1Km route in Berre-l'Étang to win with twelve seconds over his own teammate Ethan Hayter. With a tough windy stage on the menu for tomorrow he will remain a crucial piece in the INEOS Grenadiers puzzle, and although it's a long shot, under the right circumstances he could be eyeing a possible tilt at the GC as the final climb on the last day isn't brutally hard and Richard Carapaz hasn't shown the be in his best form.
"Tomorrow is a really hard stage as there is a lot of wind. Maybe it’s possible to split the bunch in the wind. We’ll see but we have to be ready," Ganna warns.
