No rest for Wout van Aert this off-season just yet. Next Sunday on the 12th of November, the 29-year-old will be one of the star attractions at the Giro del Rigo in Colombia.
"It's just a Grand Fondo, on the road. Every now and then you have to do something crazy, so to speak," says Jumbo-Visma's sports director Jan Boven in conversation with In de Leiderstrui, explaining van Aert's choice to ride in Rigoberto Uran's race. "Wout has done that before and this fits in with that. It may not even be crazy, because it is also good training and something he will really enjoy."
Van Aert is expected to return to cyclocross at some point this winter and if the reports are to be believed, the Belgian has a general classification challenge at the 2024 Giro d'Italia to prepare for. "Wout is someone who needs a different stimulus every now and then," Boven explains.
In regards to the Belgian's upcoming cyclocross calendar however, Boven is more tight-lipped. "When the plan is ready, we will share it," all the sports director is willing to divulge.
