Wout van Aert and the Giro d'Italia, a story that has been developing over the past few weeks and one that over the course of the upcoming months should be quite interesting to follow, as the Belgian may finally make his debut.
Having ridden the Tour de France on five consecutive occasions and no other Grand Tour, Wout van Aert may switch gears and try something new in 2024. He's already helped Jumbo-Visma to two Tour de France titles, won the green jersey and nine stages in total. The pressure is no longer there for him to be a key part of the Tour team, and with the Olympic Games coming two weeks after the Tour, a few riders may skip the Tour in order to do some specific preparation.
A report from Gazzetta dello Sport suggested that van Aert would make his debut at the 2024 Giro and also target the overall classification. This opens up new possibilities in his calendar. The Jumbo-Visma rider may ride the cobbled classics with full focus, debut at the Giro to chase wins and then prepare specifically for the Olympic Games.
He may also ride the Giro in search of the GC, although it will be difficult to prepare for that goal properly taking into consideration he will have to peak one month earlier for the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix. However, a rider of his talent, he should definitely be interested in testing himself as a Grand Tour contender, and this would provide an opportunity to do so without pressure. There is the chance as well that he will take other routes throughout the spring.
Many different cards are on the table for van Aert's calendar, which do you you think is best?
