The cycling world is in mourning today after the heartbreaking news of Gino Mäder's tragic passing. As the news broke after stage 3 of the Tour of Slovenia was already well underway, the day's big winner Ide Schelling was unaware.
The BORA - hansgrohe man took victory from a reduced bunch sprint after a late roundabout mishap ruled out a number of favourites, including race leader, Dylan Groenewegen. Understandably, the directors in the team cars didn't think it would be right to break the sad news to their riders whilst the race was ongoing.
After initially being overjoyed at his win, Schelling was quickly told of what had transpired in Switzerland. "I'm not really in the mood to give an interview. These tears are not tears of joy, but tears of sorrow for Gino. All joy is immediately gone,” said a distraught Schelling.
